TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team was unable to overcome an early deficit in its loss to No. 5 seed Rutgers in the first round of the BIG EAST Championships on Thursday. The Huskies will face Cincinnati in a second round match on Friday scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
Captain BreAnn Cheung (Tucson, Ariz.) and Alison Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) were defeated by Katherine Arlak and Christine Tran at No. 2 doubles while the other Connecticut pair fell by the same margin in third singles. The Scarlet Knights secured the doubles point with another 8-2 victory over Katie Moritz (York, Pa.) and Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.).
Gregory's three-set match in sixth singles was not completed after Rutgers' freshman Maryana Milchutskey won 6-1, 6-2 over Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.). Campitiello and Cheung did not finish their matches at second and third singles, respectively.
Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) lost at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1 to Amy Zhang. Moritz was shutout in the first set of her two-set loss at No. 5 singles.
UConn will face No. 7 seeded Cincinnati at 3 p.m. on Friday. The Bearcats lost in an upset 4-3 decision in favor of No. 9 seed Pittsburgh. During the regular season the Huskies hosted the Bearcats at the end of March and lost 7-0 to Cincinnati.
