STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team downed Villanova 6-1 on Saturday afternoon in Storrs, Conn. The Huskies also honored their seniors in its Senior Day celebration.
"It was a great senior day today for both teams," said Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "Each team won their matches, and every senior had a victory on the day. The men were led by Andrew Marcus and Jai Yoon, while the women were led by Emily Herb and Katie Moritz."
The Huskies swept doubles' play on the afternoon as Jennifer Learmonth and Emily Herb led the way with an 8-2 win in No. 1 doubles' action. Abby McKeon and Alexa Gregory won in the No. 2 spot with an 8-3 win, while senior Katie Moritz and Marie Gargiulo edged Anne Cognetti and Wesleigh Donadio 8-6.
Emily Herb, in No. 2 singles, defeated Allison Solberg in a pair of 6-2 sets, while Gregory downed Villanova's Amanda Nelson 6-3, 6-1 in the third spot.
Lauren Wilmarth took No. 4 singles with a 7-5, 6-3 victory. McKeon also earned a singles match win with a 6-4, 6-2 downing of Alexandra Harding, while Lucy Nutting edged Ann Cognetti 7-5 in the first set of her No. 6 singles' match. She then shutout Cognetti 6-0 in the second set win.
UConn will return to action on Tuesday, April 19 at Rutgers in a 2:00 p.m. BIG EAST Conference match.
