TULSA, Okla. - The UConn women's tennis team fell to the No. 29 ranked Houston Cougars 4-0 Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the 2015 American Athletic Conference Championship held at the University of Tulsa. The Huskies finish the season 15-9.
The Huskies got the first doubles victory of the afternoon as the No. 1 tandem of senior Maxene Weinberg (Marietta, Ga.) and Srna Stosljevic (Novi Sad, Serbia) posted a 6-4 victory over Elena Kordolaimi and Despoina Vogasari. The duo finished their season on a three-match winning streak while posting a team-best record of 14-7.
UConn nearly grabbed the doubles point but a tough 7-5 loss at No. 3 by the freshmen team of Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnista, Ukraine) and Summer Walker (Conyers, Ga.) left it to the result at No. 2 to decide it. Houston's Rocio Martin and Tina Rupert posted a 6-4 win over Emma Alderman (Hingham, Mass.) and Zaina Zaki (West Chester, Pa.) to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead heading to singles.
The tournament's top-seeded Cougars puched their ticket to the semifinal round with singles wins at the No. 2, 4 and 6 positions to end the match up 4-0. Alderman lost at No. 2 to Kordolaimi, 6-3 and 6-2 while Walker fell at No. 4 to Rocio Martin, 6-3 and 6-1. Sophomore Shea Flanagan (Overland Park, Kans.) fell at No. 6, 6-0 and 6-2, to Angela Lorenzo.
