April 18, 2010

STORRS, Conn. - The seniors of the University of Connecticut women's tennis team led the team to victory on Sunday over Pittsburgh. With the doubles point in hand, the Huskies went on to a 5-2 victory to close the regular season with a win at the University of Connecticut Tennis Courts. Both seniors Alli Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) were instrumental in doubles against the Panthers.

"This was a great win for our Senior Day," said head coach Glenn Marshall. "Our senior captains were superb in leading our team all year and this was a great way to finish their regular season careers."

Campitiello worked with freshman Abby McKeon (Westford, Mass.) to go on to a 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles while LoRusso and junior Katie Moritz (York, Pa.) went on to a 8-5 victory from the top doubles spot. Sophomores Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) led the way with the most commanding doubles victory in third. Herb and Gregory defeated the Panther opposition, 8-1.

Campitiello battled to a three-set victory at No. 2 singles after trailing with a first-set loss. She battled Adela Aprodu for the win. LoRusso fell in two sets to Elizabeth Adams, dropping a 6-2, 6-5 decision.

The Panthers won just one other singles match, a three-setter at No. 5 over McKeon. McKeon won the second-set to force the third set.

Herb took another commanding victory over Pittsburgh with a two-set win at No. 4, winning 6-0, 6-1. Her doubles partner, Gregory, shutout Gabrielle Cantanzariti in the opening set and went on for the win with a 706 decision in the second.

Freshman Lauren Wilmarth (Andover, Mass.) went on to victory in her second-consecutive appearance at No. 6 singles for the Huskies. Wilmarth won a 6-1, 7-6 match over Karma Parbhu.

The victory puts the women's tennis team in contention for a BIG EAST Tournament appearance as the rest of the field shakes out and will be announced on Monday. UConn closes the regular season with a 6-10 spring record and an even 4-4 mark in BIG EAST action.
