Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season with C Flight Win

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis team opened the fall season at the Fairfield Doubles Invitational on Saturday with a win in the C flight doubles.

UConn sophomores Lauren Wilmarth and Sarah Griffin were victorious on that afternoon, winning the C flight for the Huskies. The two sophomores defeated Bryant 8-4 in the final match.

Wilmarth and Griffin began the day defeating Hartford 8-2 then Bryant 8-3 before blanking Sacred Heart's Maggie Tooley and Lauren Rodrigues 8-0 to reach the semifinals.

In the semifinal, Wilmarth and Griffin defeated the second Bryant duo 8-4 to reach the final of the flight, where they faced their first Bryant competitors for the second time of the day. The Huskies won 8-4 for the final match win over the Bryant Gold duo.

UConn freshman Jennifer Learmonth teamed up with senior Emily Herb in the first flight as the two Huskies began the invitational with an 8-2 win over Hartford's Katina Zampas and Maggie Sabatino. Next, the duo took an 8-0 win over Sacred Heart's Elizabeth Harrington and Kristina Chao before falling in the semifinal to Providence 8-5.

UConn's B flight consisted of two duos, including a UConn White pair of Alexa Gregory and Marie Gargiulo and UConn Blue's Abby McKeon and Lucy Nutting. The UConn White duo won its seventh-place match to Hartford with an 8-2 victory.

The B and C flights were both won by Quinnipiac University.

The fall season continues for the UConn women's tennis team with a road trip to Hamden, Conn. for the Quinnipiac Invite on Friday, Sept. 17.
