Women's Tennis Continues Play at Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, Conn. - Several Huskies will compete in semifinal and final action on Sunday as the UConn women's tennis team concludes its play at the Quinnipiac Invite in Hamden, Conn.

In the B Singles flight on Saturday, Alexa Gregory was able to earn her way into the Sunday quarterfinal round after defeating Fairfield's Kristen Liu by default before edging Seton Hall's Tugcan Belfin Sunbul in a close match at 6-1, 5-7, 10-7. In the quarterfinals, Gregory will face Quinnipiac's Julie Labarthe.

Abby McKeon earned a bye in the first round of the C Singles then downed Quinnipiac's Lavinia Cristiescu 6-3 and 6-2. Next up for the junior will be a semifinal match-up on Sunday with Carly Riney from Army. Lucy Nutting won her first singles match of the weekend as she edged URI's Brooke Hoover 6-4 and 6-3. Nutting fell short in her next match and did not advance on in the bracket.

In D Singles competition, Sarah Griffin defeated URI's Jodie Greenlaw in a pair of 6-2 sets then advanced to the quarterfinal round where she put together a 6-3, 6-1 win over Morgen Kiser of Army. Griffin will next face Caroline Emhardt from Fairfield, who eliminated UConn's Lauren Rothermich from the bracket earlier in the day.

Marie Gargiulo will play in the other D Singles semifinal match as she will face Army's Kari Pope. Gargiulo defeated Quinnipiac's Bethany Huard 6-1 and 6-2 then URI's Jenna Williams 6-1, 6-0 to advance.

A pair of UConn duos faced each other in semifinal action on Saturday as Lauren Wilmarth and Lucy Nutting defeated fellow teammates Marie Gargiulo and Rothermich by a score of 8-4. Wilmarth and Nutting will now face Seton Hall's Sunbul and Karina Cordero Martinez in the finals of the B Doubles on Sunday.
