STORRS, Conn.- The UConn women's tennis program competed this weekend at the Quinnipiac Invitational in Hamden, Conn. Sophomore Jennifer Learmonth advanced to the finals of the "A" singles tournament.
Learmonth defeated her first three opponents but fell to Hartford's No.1, 6-3, 6-0. Learmonth won her first matchup against Seton Hall, 4-6, 7-5 (10-4). The semifinals saw Learmonth advance past Sacred Heart, 6-4, 6-1.
In the "B" Singles, freshman Maxene Weinberg advanced to the semifinals with a 2-6, 6-4 (10-5) victory over Seton Hall. She fell in the semifinals, to Quinnipiac, 6-2, 6-3.
Freshman Natalie Robson and junior Lauren Wilmarth both competed in the "C" Singles. Robson fell in the opening round to Army 7-5, 6-2. Wilmarth defeated Hartford, 6-0, 6-1. After defeating Army 6-3, 6-3, she eventually fell in the semifinals to Quinnipiac in a tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-3 (10-7).
Learmonth and Weinberg also combined for the doubles event. The duo had a bye in the first round, but fell in the second round to Quinnipiac 8-6.
Three UConn teams competed in the doubles event. Wilmarth and Robson combined to defeat a team from Fairfield, 8-2, but fell by the same score to Seton Hall in the following round.
Freshman Sarah Baker and junior Lauren Rothermich also competed in the doubles event but failed to advance with an 8-4 loss.
The women's squad will compete next at the Army Invitational from September 23-25 in West Point, N.Y.
