STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team competed at the Quinnipiac Invitational this past weekend with sophomore Maxene Weinberg putting on the top performance for Connecticut. Weinberg won the B flight singles for the Huskies.
Weinberg had a bye in the opening round before defeating her opponent from Quinnipiac, 7-5,6-1. She defeated Seton Hall in convincing fashion, 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinals before winning the championship over another Seton Hall student-athlete, 6-3, 6-2.
Lucy Nutting also competed in B singles. She went 2-1, winning 6-2, 6-1 in the opener and coming from behind to win 1-6, 6-4 (13-11) in her second round match.
In A doubles, Weinberg combined with Jennifer Learmonth to advance to the semifinals. The duo had a bye in the opening round before defeating a pairing from Seton Hall, 8-5. They lost in the semifinals to Quinnipiac, 8-5.
UConn had two pairings perform well in B doubles action. Junior Lucy Nutting and sophomore Emilie Burgess advanced to the championship match, falling 8-3 in the final to Quinnipiac. They advanced to the final match after wins of 8-0, 8-2 and 8-5.
Senior Julia Allen and sophomore Natalie Robson advanced to the semifinals of the B flight doubles with an 8-2 victory over Quinnipiac in the first round and an 8-4 result over Seton Hall in the second. They fell in the semifinals to the eventual champions from Quinnipiac, 8-2.
The Huskies will compete in the Army Invitational from Friday, September 21 - Sunday, September 23 at West Point, N.Y.
