HAMDEN, Conn. - A pair of University of Connecticut women's tennis players captured singles titles at the Quinnipiac Invitational on Sunday. Freshmen Lauren Wilmarth (Andover, Mass.) and Julia Allen (Raleigh, N.C.) and won their respective finals matches in the "C" and "D" singles brackets.
Wilmarth reached the finals of the "C" bracket after winning a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Brooke Hoover (University of Rhode Island) in the semis. In the final match, Wilmarth shutout Seton Hall's Michele Weerasinghe to win her second match over a BIG EAST opponent in the invitational.
In the "D" singles bracket, Allen was forced to face a familiar face in the finals match, taking on teammate junior Katie Moritz (York, Pa.). Allen earned her spot in the final with a 6-4, 6-2 over Seton Hall's Delaney Downing in the semis while Moritz advanced to the finals with a three-set (4-6, 6-3, 10-6) decision over Morgan Kiser from Army. Allen claimed the title for UConn with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Moritz.
In doubles, senior Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) with freshman Abby McKeon (Westford, Mass.) lost in the finals of the "A" doubles bracket to the University of Rhode Island duo of Tristany and Kristen Leikem. LoRusso and McKeon fell in the final match 8-4.
Senior Alison Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) fell in three-sets (6-7 (5), 6-3, 10-8) in her semifinal match to Jess Ahn of Army. Ahn lost in the finals to Quinnipiac's Adrienne Markison in the "B" singles flight.
Next weekend the Huskies head to West Point, N.Y. to take part in the Eastern Championships hosted by Army Sept. 25-27.
