HAMDEN, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team was led by Abby McKeon this past weekend at the Quinnipiac Invitational as McKeon won the C Singles for the Huskies. In doubles action, UConn's Lucy Nutting and Lauren Wilmarth won the B flight.
After earning a bye in the first round of the C flight, the sophomore downed Quinnipiac's Lavinia Cristiescu 6-3 and 6-2 then defeated Army's Carly Riney in a semifinal match-up on Sunday. She won the match 6-1, 6-3 before facing Seton Hall's Karina Cordero Martinez in the finals. McKeon breezed through the final match, winning 6-2 and 6-0.
Nutting and Wilmarth defeated fellow Huskies Marie Gargiulo and Lauren Rothermich in a B doubles' semifinal match to advance to the finals to face Seton Hall's Tugcan Belfin Sunbul and Martinez The UConn duo won the Sunday match 8-3 to win the flight.
Marie Gargiulo played her way into the D Singles final after defeating Army's Kari Pope 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). Despite falling to Fairfield's Caroline Emhardt in the final by a pair of 6-4 sets, the freshman earned some impressive victories over Quinnipiac's Bethany Huard (6-1, 6-2), URI's Jenna Williams (6-1, 6-0) and Army's Pope.
The Huskies will return to action on Friday, Sept. 24 at the Army Invitational in West Point, N.Y.
