Huskies Conclude Day One at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team concluded day one at the Army Invitation on Friday as the Huskies were led by Sarah Griffin and Marie Gargiulo in the second flight of the doubles competition.

The pair of Huskies opened up play with an 8-1 victory over Sacred Heart's Kristin Legenza and Michelle Aptekin. Griffin and Gargiulo then downed Abbey Perl and Kathleen Larkin of LeHigh 8-1 to advance to Saturday's quarterfinal round. In the quarters, the UConn duo will face UMass' Jocelyn Providence and Kaitlyn Carpenter. In B singles, Alexa Gregory opened her weekend with a 1-6, 6-3, 10-5 come-from-behind win over Providence College's Maria Clara-Bernandez before falling short to Emily Stein of Army 6-3, 7-6(2).

Sophomore Lauren Wilmarth defeated Maya Welch of Holy Cross 6-3, 6-1 in the round of 32 of the C singles on Friday before losing to Gabby Devlin of UMass 6-4, 6-2.

The Huskies will continue play at the Army Invitational in West Point, N.Y. on Saturday morning.
