Women's Tennis Competes At West Point Invitational

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's tennis program competed at the West Point Invitational this weekend hosted by Army in West Point, N.Y. Freshman Maxene Weinberg performed well, winning the championship of her consolation flight.

Junior Julie Allen and sophomore Lucy Nutting competed in the second flight of doubles, advancing to the semifinals. Allen and Nutting earned a bye in the first round and defeated Aubrey Brooks and Sarah Iannone in the quarterfinals in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (6). The duo lost to the eventual champions from Seton Hall, 8-5.

Sophomore Jennifer Learmonth fell in her opening match in 1st singles to Pam Emery from Rhode Island, 6-2; 6-3.

Senior Alexa Gregory advanced to the quarterfinals of the second singles with an 8-1 victory over Lucy Bird from Bryant. Gregory fell to eventual champion Jessica Podlofsky of UMass, 6-4; 4-6; 10-7. She later fell to Marisela Aviles in the quarterfinals of her consolation bracket, 9-7.

Freshman Maxene Weinberg suffered a 6-4; 6-3 defeat to Maria Bernardez but went on to win her consolation bracket with four-straight victories, concluding with an 8-1 result over Kate Donnelly from Sacred Heart in the finals.

Sophomore Marie Gargiulo advanced to the quarterfinals in her bracket, defeating Amanda Wickman of Pittsburgh, 9-8 (7).

Junior Lauren Wilmarth also advanced to the quarterfinals of the third singles but fell to Natalie Allen of Army, 6-1; 6-0.

The Huskies will compete next in a dual match against Massachusetts on October 5.
