HAMDEN, Conn. - Senior Jennifer Learmonth (Elgin, S.C.) and freshman Shea Flanagan (Overland Park, Kan.) each notched victories in both singles and doubles Monday to lead the UConn women's tennis team to a 5-2 win over Quinnipiac.
Learmonth stopped Quinnipiac's Kelsi Oliphant, 6-3, 6-2, and Flanagan defeated Quinnipiac's Ariana Launie, 6-2, 6-0, in singles and the UConn duo then paired up to upend Quinnipiac's Mary Chupa and Launie, 8-3, in doubles.
The other three UConn wins were produced by sophomore Srna Stosljevic (Novi Sad, Serbia), who beat Quinnipiac's Jackie Raynor, 4-6, 6-0, 7-5, freshman Emma Alderman (Hingham, Mass.), who defeated Quinnipiac's Rachel Horton, 6-3, 6-4, and senior Lucy Nutting (Wilmington, Del.), who topped Quinnipiac's Chupa, 6-2, 2-1 (retired).
In other singles matches, UConn junior Maxie Weinberg (Marietta, Ga.) bowed to Quinnipiac's Sydney Young, 3-6, 6-4, 10-5. In the other doubles matches, UConn's Stosljevic and Weinberg lost to Quinnipiac's Horton and Young, 8-3, while Quinnipiac's Raynor and Michelle Dassa outdueled UConn's Nutting and Alderman.
"We lost to Quinnipiac last year by a score of 6-1, so this was a great win for us," said Glenn Marshall, UConn's director of tennis. "We lost the doubles point, but I was happy that the team responded very strong in our singles matches, winning five of the six."
UConn will continue its schedule on Wednesday, Oct. 9, traveling to Amherst, Mass., to challenge UMass, then will compete in the Women's College Invitational on Oct. 11-13 at the National Tennis Center in New York City.
