LEWISBURG, Pa. - A trio of University of Connecticut women's tennis players won titles at the Bucknell Invitational this weekend. Freshman Julia Allen (Raleigh, N.C.) won a singles title while classmate Abby McKeon (Westford, Mass.) and sophomore Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) worked together to claim a doubles title in Lewisburg.
Allen won four two-set decisions to earn the C Singles Main draw bracket at the invitational. Allen first defeated Catherine Crisostomo from George Mason in straight-sets (6-1, 6-1) before taking down Jenn Ciotti (Bucknell), 6-0, 6-1. In the semifinal match, Allen defeated George Mason's Aryn Christman 6-3, 6-4 to earn her spot in the finals against Bucknell's Liz Larkin.
McKeon and Gregory won the B Doubles Main Draw over George Mason's London and Cutchin by an 8-1 margin. McKeon and Gregory earned their spot with back-to-back wins over duos from the host school, Bucknell. Connecticut defeated Dara Dwojewski and Demi Iepuras, 8-2, to secure their spot in the finals after getting things started with an 8-4 win over Courtney Casey and Kirstyan Sotak.
Allen continued her dominate play to take the final 6-1, 6-4 over Larkin. Larkin defeated UConn teammate Katie Mortiz (York, Pa.) in the quarters en route to her spot in the finals. Moritz lost her lone singles match of the invitational to Larkin after taking a first-round bye.
After Gregory reached the semifinal match of the B Singles Main draw she switched so as to not face UConn teammate McKeon in her quest for a spot in the final match. Gregory's quest fell short after Demi Iepuras (Bucknell) surpassed her with a pair of 6-1 set victories.
McKeon made it to the final match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Dara Dwojewski of Bucknell. Iepuras took down her second-consecutive opponent from UConn with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over McKeon to win the B Main Draw.
The Huskies were unable to find success in the A Singles Main Draw as Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.), Alison Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) each fell in the first round.
Herb and LoRusso each lost three-set decisions to their respective opponents from George Mason. Herb lost a 7-5, 4-6 (10-6) decision to Kiersten Papas while LoRusso fell to Lindsay Gray, 2-6, 6-4, (10-2). Campitiello lost in straight-sets to Colgate's Elise DeRose (6-3, 7-5).
Campitiello and LoRusso benefited from an early round by in the A Doubles Main bracket to defeat a duo from Bucknell before falling to Fairleigh Dickinson's Julia Prantl and Egzona Morina. In the same doubles bracket, Herb and Wilmarth lost their second match of the day after winning 8-4 over George Mason's Gray and Greco. Herb and Wilmarth were unable to get past Elmine Botes and Julija Korsunova from Fairleigh Dickinson.
UConn's season continues on the road with a 2:30 p.m. match at UMass on Wednesday.
