Huskies Lose Close 4-3 Battle at UMass Women's Tennis

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team fell 4-3 in a tightly contested battle at Massachusetts on Thursday. Freshmen Lauren Wilmarth (Andover, Mass.) and Abby McKeon (Westford, Mass.) each won in singles while sophomore Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) earned a three-set decision in fifth singles.

Wilmarth defeated Maude Lecluyse 6-4, 7-6 (5) in fourth singles. At No. 6 singles, McKeon took the win in straight sets over Tanisha Hodgson. With Gregory's three-set victory at No. 5, the Huskies took the final three singles battles against the Minutewomen.

Gregory and McKeon lost their doubles match at No. 3 to Kaitlyn Carpenter and Tanisha Hodgson. Wilmarth paired with junior Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) in second doubles, falling to Magdalena Ploch and Julia Comas (8-2).

Seniors Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) and Alison Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) lost an 8-4 match at No. 1 doubles with UConn falling behind in the match as UMass completed the sweep in doubles.

The Minutewomen swept the first three singles matches with LoRusso, Herb and Campitiello falling in their respective singles matches.

Fall season continues for the women's tennis team (1-1) on Oct. 13 at 2:30 p.m. when the Huskies travel to intrastate rival Quinnipiac.
