WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The UConn women's tennis team spent the weekend at the Wake Forest Invitational with the tandem of junior Shea Flanagan (Overland Park, Kans.) and sophomore Summer Walker (Conyers, Ga.) each claimed a share of the "F" Flight singles title. The Huskies finished the weekend posting a 17-7 mark in singles play.
"This was a great weekend of tennis for our program," stated head coach Glenn Marshall. "We got to play against many top teams from the southern states and don't get to play against this level of competition very often in the fall. I thought we played very well all weekend and am very proud of the teams effort."
Flanagan and Walker each went 3-0 in the F draw so come away as "Co-Champs". Flannagan opnened her tournament with a 7-6 (4), 7-5 win over Laura Gomes of UNC Wilmington. She followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Heidi Swope of Appalachian State to advance to the semifinal. She earned her way to the finals with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Liberty's Valerie Thong.
Walker posted a three-set win over Maria Gomez of East Carolina, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in her first match of the tournament. She moved into the semis with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Corinne Blythe of UNC Greensboro. Walker secured her shared title with Flanagan thanks to a three-set win over Sarah Sarjoo of East Carolina, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Senior Srna Stosljevic (Novi Sad, Serbia), junior Emma Alderman (Hingham, Mass.), sophomores Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnitsa, Ukraine) and Zaina Zaki (West Chester, Pa.) and freshman Jacqueline Lazaro (Largo, Fla.) all won a pair of matches each in the singles draw.
In the "A" flight, Stosljevic won her opening match beating over Clare Cox of Appalachian State, 6-1, 6-3. She also picked up a win over Catherine Feaster of Davidson, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
In the "B" flight, Alderman picked up wins over Ana Gerbasi of East Tennessee State, 6-1 and 6-2, and over Ava Todd of Davidson, 6-1 and 6-3. In the "C" flight, Pletnyeva won a three set battle with Elon's Natalia Janowicz, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4, and beat Melissa Machado of Appalachian State, 6-4, 6-1.
Zaki won two matches in the "E" flight, beating Annika Sillanpaa of UNC Wilmington, 7-5, 6-4 and Aleksandra Panchenko of Liberty, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. Lazaro won her opening match in the "F" flight, 6-2 and 6-2 over Devin Knors of Appalachian State. She also picked up a win in the consolation bracket over Alexandra Lee of Charlotte, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles, Lazaro and Walker teamed for a pair of wins in the "C" bracket. The duo beat Megan Scholvinck and Todd of Davidson, 6-3, and Gaby Rosales and Kelsey Williams of Richmond, 7-6 (3).
The Huskies will close out the fall season at the ITA Regional Championship on October 22-25 at Dartmouth.
