PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The UConn women’s tennis tandem of senior Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnitsa, Ukraine) and junior Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph (Tampa, Fla.) advanced to the second round at the ITA Northeast Regional Championship at the University of Pennsylvania.
Fitz-Randolph picked-up an opening round win on Thursday afternoon to advance, beating Drexel’s Salma Ziouti, 7-6 (5), 6-2. She will take on Abigail Chiu from Dartmouth in round two on Friday.
Pletnyeva earned a bye in the first round of the main draw and will face Maddie Stearns from Brown on Friday. In the doubles draw, Pletnyeva and sophomore Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia) teamed for an opening round win. The duo beat Drexel’s Ziouti and Clay Rodriguez Cruz, 8-7 (4).
In the qualifying bracket, a pair of Huskies picked-up opening wins but fell just short of making the main draw. Senior Summer Walker (Conyers, Ga.) went to three sets with St. John’s Irina Preotescu, losing the first 6-4, rebounding in the second for a 7-6 (4) win. Walker led 4-1 in the third before Preotescu was forced to retire. Walker came up short of getting to the main draw, falling to Temple’s Kristina Titova, 6-3 and 7-5.
Junior Jacqueline Lazaro (Largo, Fla.) impressed with 6-0, 6-0 win over Clay Rodriguez Cruz of Drexel. She came up short falling in three sets to NJIT’s Natacha Minc. After winning the first set 6-1, Minc boasted 6-4 and 6-3 wins.
Play at the ITA Regional continues on Friday at Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Center and runs through Sunday.
