USTA Billie Jean King Women's College Invitational Results

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team competed at the USTA Billie Jean King Women's College Invitational at the USTA National Tennis Center over the weekend.

In the Singles "B" main draw, freshman Emma Alderman (Hingham, Mass.) advanced into the quarterfinal round thanks to a win over Seton Hall's Hannah Lijekvist.  Alderman won a three-set battle to advance out of  the round of 16.  She took the first set 7-6 (4), dropped the second 6-3 and fought her way to a 10-6 win in the third to take the match.  Alderman was beaten in the quarter by Gina Li of Rutgers, 7-5, 6-1.

In doubles play, the duo of senior Marie Gargiulo (Weston, Conn.) and freshman Jenise Vargas (Pasadena, Calif.) advanced to the semifinals of the #4 doubles main draw.  Gargiulo and Vargas opened with an 8-3 win over Olivia Hogan and Amanda Pitocco of Providence.  They won their quarterfinal round match against Bianca Derrick and Bianca Posa of Hofstra, 8-5.  The teams run ended in the semi's by eventual draw champions Destiny Grunin and Nataliya Naumova of Fordham, 8-4.

Sophomore Srna Stosljevic (Novi Sad, Serbia), lost in the singles "A" draw to Charleston Southern's Yvonne Hubler, 7-6 (5), 6-4.  She beat Anastasia Polyakova of St. John's in the consolation draw, 4-6, 6-1, 10-2 before losing a three-set battle with Dorothy Safron of Delaware, 7-6 (6), 1-6, 10-5.



Junior Maxene Weinberg (Marietta, Ga.), seniors Lucy Nutting (Wilmington, Del.) and Gargiulo and freshmen Shea Flanagan (Overland Park, Kan.) and Jenise Vargas (Pasadena, Calif.) all notched singles wins in the consolation draw.  

Weinberg beat Rafaela Panizza of St. Francis, 6-3, 6-4 while Nutting defeated Providence's Hanna Zangari, 6-3, 6-0.  Gargiulo topped Camila Diaz-Padron of St. Francis, 6-3, 6-1.

The two rookies each won a pair of matches in their consolations brackets.  Vargas defeated Hofstra's Bianca Posa, 6-1 and 6-0, and Hannelore MacDonald in three-sets, 6-0, 6-7 (2), 10-8.  Flanagan beat Joan Cannon of Princeton in three-sets, 2-6, 7-5, 10-6 annd Lucy Jasso of St. Francis, 6-4, 7-6 (2).

The team of Stosljevic and Weinberg lost a tough 8-6 decision to Pitt's Jocelyn Lu and Taylor Washington in the top draw but notched a pair of wins in the consolation draw.  The duo topped Elizabeth Thomas and Ekaterina Tugarinova, 8-3, and Carmen Lai and Dorothy Safron of Delaware, 8-4.  The team of Flanagan and Nutting earned a consolation victory in the second doubles draw, beating Fordham's Angie Dabu and Anika Novacek, 8-5.
