UConn Women's Tennis Inks Two to National Letters of Intent

STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut head women's tennis coach Glenn Marshall announced that Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnitsa, Ukraine / Vinnitsa #13) and Jacquelyn Lazaro (Largo, Fla. / Clearwater Central Catholic H.S.) have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Husky tennis program.  Pletnyeva, the program's first international recruit, will be on campus for the start of the spring semester and begin playing with the Huskies during the spring season.  Lazaro will begin her collegiate career in the fall of 2015.

"I am very excited to welcome our first international recruit to the program," stated Marshall. "Yelyzaveta has competed in many international events all throughout Europe.  She will bring that experience and make an immediate impact to our team in the spring season.  

"I am pleased to welcome Jacque to our program for the fall of 2015," commented the head coach. "She has been playing in the very tough Florida tennis section, and that has made her into a great competitor.  I look forward to seeing her wearing the Husky Blue and White, and helping our team reach new heights."

Pletnyev began competing in tournaments in the Ukraine as early as nine-years old and has put together an impressive international resume that includes over 30 cup titles.  She received Master of Sport honors in her home country after winning a pair of Ukrainian doubles championships in 2012 and 2013.  She was ranked as high as #3 in Ukraine in 2012 and earned a spot on the national team, competing in the Junior Fed Cup in London were they finished fourth.  In 2011, she won the Nike Junior Tour in Ukraine in both singles and doubles, earning a chance to compete in the NJT Masters in the United States while also competing in the Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl tournaments.  She has also played for the International Tennis Federation in tournaments in Moldova, Dubai, Bulgaria, Egypt and her home country. 



Lazaro, who has been ranked in the Top-30 as an amateur in the state of Florida, will come to Storrs from Clearwater Central Catholic High School.  Lazaro is a 4-star recruit and ranked #106 nationally on  She is a multiple tournament winner and has garnered several Sportsmanship Awards at USTA tournaments during her playing career.  She took second place in doubles play at the Gator Bowl, and finished in the top four three times in doubles play at the Bobby Curtis State Doubles tournament.  On the high school courts, she was named the team MVP as a freshman and will conclude her playing career this spring looking to lead her team to a state title.

Off the courts, Lazaro is a member of her school's National Honor Society as well as the Science Honor Society, Art Honor Society, Math Honor Society, History Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society.  An honor roll student-athlete since her freshman year, she was also selected to attend the "Give Kids The World" service project in Orlando, Florida.
