Women's Tennis Edges Air Force 4-3 But Falls to Army 6-1

WEST POINT, N.Y. (February 18, 2007) - The University of Connecticut women's tennis team edged Air Force in an exciting 4-3 win but fell to Army 6-1 on Sunday afternoon in West Point, N.Y.

Against the Falcons, freshman Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) defeated Jennifer Walters at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Ali Campitiello (New York, N.Y.) took down Meghan Kiser at No. 5 7-6, 6-3. At No. 6, senior Ashley Petruzzi (Bradenton, Fla.) was a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 winner over Erlyn Rudico.

The Huskies took the doubles point with an 8-1 win at No. 1 by junior Jessica Porter (Duluth, Ga.) and sophomore Breann Cheung (Tucson, Ariz.) combined with a win at No. 2 by Campitiello and LoRusso over Christine Abayan and Rudico 8-2.

Senior Christine Burek (Wheaton, Ill.) was defeated at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-4 by Abayan while Air Force's Lauren Wilson was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Porter at No. 3. Cheung lost at No. 4 to Kelly Morgan 6-4, 6-0. Senior Liz Dibbs (Allentown, Pa.) and Burek were defeated by Walters and Morgan at No. 3 doubles 8-2.

In action against Army, the Huskies fell 6-1. Campitiello was the only singles winner with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Christine Limsiaco. Dibbs and Burek teamed up for a win at No. 3 doubles over Kristine Beehler and Paige Ford 8-3.

At No. 1 singles, Burek was defeated by Niki Flach 6-0, 6-1 while LoRusso lost a 6-1, 6-2 match to Brooke Jones. Porter took the first set against Beehler but dropped the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3. Cheung was defeated 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 by Jessica Shurtz. Dibbs lost to Ford at No. 6 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.

In doubles play, Porter and Cheung were defeated at No. 1 by Flach and Jones 8-4 while LoRusso and Campitiello lost to Sarah Giles-Madden and Shurtz 9-7.

UConn is back in action this Friday night at Marquette with matches beginning at 6 p.m.
