STORRS, CT (Feb. 29) - The University of Connecticut womens tennis team suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Syracuse on Sunday, losing the match by a score of 4-3. The loss drops the Huskies to 1-5 on the season in dual match play.
UConn took the doubles point to begin the match, with juniors Barbara Schumsky (West Hartford, Conn.) and Jen LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) teaming up for an 8-1 win at the No. 2 doubles spot. Syracuse pulled out of the No. 3 doubles match due to injury to give UConn two of three wins in doubles.
In singles play, freshman Christine Burek (Wheaton, Ill.) took a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over Kendyl Severino in the No. 5 spot, and Schumsky won the first set at the No. 3 spot by a score of 6-0 before her opponent retired with an injury. UConns No. 1 singles player, junior Whitney Simcik (Exeter, Pa.), took the first set by a score of 6-1 over Trine Lise Juliussen but ultimately lost in three sets.
The Huskies will return to action when they travel to Florida to face a number of opponents over Spring Break.
