Winning Ways Continue for Women's Tennis in Florida

TAMPA, Fla. (March 11, 2009) - Against one of the nation’s top-ranked junior colleges, the University of Connecticut women’s tennis team earned another win in Florida. The Huskies defeated Hillsborough Community College, 5-4, playing a nine-point match under the junior college rules. All doubles matches were counted as one point.

“This was a tremendous win against the nation’s top-ranked junior college,” head coach Glenn Marshall said. “Senior captain BreAnn Cheung was the clinching victory of the day. We had some great momentum having won three-straight matches.”

Cheung secured the UConn win with a victory at No. 3 singles. After dropping the first set 7-5, the Tucson, Ariz. Native dominated Courtney Stafford en route to a pair of 6-1 victories in the second and third sets.

The Huskies were down by two after Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) and Allison Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) lost in first singles and Emily Searle (Lyme, Conn.) and Jennifer Marotta (Nesconset, N.Y.) were unable to get past their Hillsborough competition.

Cheung, along with Katie Moritz (York, Pa.) earned a challenging doubles match at No. 2. Moritz and Cheung won a 9-8 (3) decision over Courtney Spafford and Ashley Albro for the first Connecticut point.

Campitiello and LoRusso were unable to find their stride in singles play, falling in their respective matches at first and second singles.

Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) was the first UConn singles player at No. 5 to step off the court after a pair of 6-0 sets to win. Moritz shutout her opponent in the first set and won at No. 4 with a 6-3 victory in the second.

Searle rebounded from a 6-4 loss in the first set to take the final two, 6-3, 6-2 from the sixth singles spot.

It was Cheung’s three-set victory at third singles that secured the Huskies’ third-straight victory of the spring, moving their overall record to 3-5. UConn is 3-4 in spring match play.

The team continues the season in the sunshine state with a 1:30 p.m. match against Valparaiso on Thursday.
