March 18, 2009

STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut women's tennis team captain BreAnn Cheung (Tucson, Ariz.) was named the BIG EAST women's player of the week as announced by the conference on Wednesday. Cheung led the Huskies to a 4-0 spring break trip from third singles and second doubles. She was undefeated in both in Florida, compiling an 8-0 record.

Against one of the top junior colleges in the nation, Cheung secured a 5-4 UConn victory with a three-set win at No. 3 singles against Hillsborough CC. In the opening match of the trip against South Dakota, Cheung held her opponent to a single win in the Huskies' 6-1 victory. She remained undefeated in singles play, helping Connecticut to a singles-only match victory against Radford. Cheung concluded the trip with a singles win against Valparaiso on the final day of competition in Florida.

Pairing with Katie Moritz (York, Pa.) twice and once with Alison Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.), Cheung won three-straight doubles matches on the trip. In their final doubles match of the trip, Cheung and Campitiello shutout a duo from Valparaiso at No. 2.

Led by Cheung's commanding play, the Huskies evened their spring record to 4-4 after winning each match over spring break. UConn resumes BIG EAST play at Syracuse on March 20 at 11 a.m. before hosting Georgetown on Sunday for an 11 a.m. contest.
