STORRS, Conn. - UConn freshmen Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnitsa, Ukraine) was named the American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week announced by the league office on Tuesday. It is the first career conference award for Pletnyeva.
"This award is well deserved for Lizzy," stated head coach Glenn Marshall. "She has been playing terrific tennis for us and I am very proud of her accomplishments."
Pletnyeva helped the Huskies to five-straight victories after wins over Fairfield (7-0), Temple (4-3) and Villanova (7-0). Pletnyeva finished her week 3-0 in singles play and 2-1 playing doubles and extended her winning streak to a team-best six-straight in singles action. She heads into this week 7-3 over her last 10 matches. The freshman recorded three straight-set victories at No. 3 singles, starting with a win over Fairfield's Nicole Aragones (6-0, 6-1) Thursday. Pletnyeva defeated Temple's Dina Karina (6-1, 6-2) Saturday and Villanova's Alexandra Krogius (6-1, 6-2) Sunday.
Since joining the team during the spring semester, Pletnyeva has posted an 11-5 mark. In doubles play, she improved to 11-5 on the year as well and playing alongside classmate Summer Walker (Conyers, Ga.), the duo is 9-4.
The Huskies will play host to Boston University on Thursday, April 2nd in their only action this week.
