Alderman and Flanagan Named Women's Tennis Captains

Sept. 8, 2016

STORRS, Conn. - UConn women's tennis head coach Glenn Marshall announced that seniors Emma Alderman (Hingham, Mass.) and Shea Flanagan (Overland Park, Kans.) have been named team captains for the upcoming 2016-17 season.

"I am very excited to announce our captains for the 2016-17 season," stated Marshall.  "Emma Alderman and Shea Flanagan are both seniors, and have been leading by example for several years, on and off the court.  While their tennis skills have led to many great individual and team accolades, I am most excited about their ability to lead our team with outstanding focus, energy, and positive attitudes."

Alderman held down the No. 2 singles position for the Huskies for the third-straight season and is coming off a year where she went 17-13 in singles play and 18-10 in doubles.  Her 18 doubles victories were tied for the most on the team last year.  She teamed with sophomore Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnitsa, Ukraine) to post a 16-9 doubles record.  During the fall season, Alderman played in the main singles draw at the ITA Northeast Regional.  She heads into her final season with 56 career singles victories and 42 career doubles wins.

Flanagan posted a 21-9 singles record last season and finished 18-10 in doubles play.  Her 21 singles victories were second on the team while her 18 wins in doubles play tied for the team lead.  During the fall season, she was a team best 11-2 and won shares of the "C" Flight title at the Quinnipiac Invitational and the "F" Flight title at the Wake Forest Invite.  She will enter her final season at UConn with 55 career singles wins and 38 career doubles wins.

The Huskies will open their 2016-17 season at the Quinnipiac Invitational next weekend, September 16-18.
