Huskies Open Fall Slate at QU Invitational

Sept. 14, 2017

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women’s tennis team will open their fall tournament schedule this weekend with their annual stop at the Quinnipiac Invitational. The Huskies have had tremendous success at the QU Invite, posting a 28-6 singles record and went 6-3 in doubles on the way to winning all four singles flights and the top doubles flight at the eight team tournament last fall.

Head Coach Glenn Marshall will have three seniors in Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnitsa, Ukraine), Summer Walker (Conyers, Ga.) and Zaina Zaki (West Chester, Pa.) leading a strong roster this season.

Pletnyeva is coming off consecutive 20-win seasons in singles action. She posted a 23-8 record last season, earning her 2017 All-American Athletic Conference honors. In her three seasons at UConn, she has 63 singles wins and 43 doubles victories on her ledger. She shared the A Flight singles title and won the A Flight doubles title at this tournament last year.

Walker posted 14 singles wins, nine during the fall tournament slate last season. Zakie is coming off a season where she collected nine wins. She twice won a singles flight at the Quinnipiac Invitational.

A trio of juniors in Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph (Tampa, Fla.), Jacqueline Lazaro (Largo, Fla.) and Gillian Perrotta (Scarsdale, Pa.) are all coming off strong seasons. Ftiz-Randolph won 14 singles matches and was part of UConn’s top-doubles team with Perrotta. The duo went on to post a 21-7 record together and won the A Flight doubles title at this tournament last year. Fitz-Randolph won the B Flight title at QU last fall.

Lazaro finished 15-3 in singles play last year, going 7-1 during the fall season. She finished with 16 doubles wins. She won the D Flight singles title at Quinnipiac last season.

A pair of newcomers will make their UConn debuts in sophomore Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia), a transfer from New Mexico, and freshman Elizabeth Kozyi (Boca Raton, Fla.). Chung won 13 singles matches for the Lobos last year.

The Huskies continue their fall season with tournament appearances at the Harvard Fall Classic, the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational and the ITA Regional Championship. UConn will travel to Quinnipiac and UMass for dual matches.
