Women's Tennis Claims Doubles Title at Quinnipiac Invitational

HAMDEN, Conn. (Sept. 21, 2008) – Allison Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) and BreAnn Cheung (Tucson, Ariz.) captured the doubles “A” flight title for the University of Connecticut women’s tennis team on Sunday. The Husky duo defeated University of Rhode Island’s Tristany Leikem and Kristen Leikem 9-7.

Katie Moritz (York, Pa.) and Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) advanced to the semifinals in the doubles “B” flight after winning their quarterfinal match 8-4. Moritz and Gregory fell 8-6 to the UMBC pair of Couto and Jackman, finishing the invitational with a 3-1 record.

UConn’s Kelly LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) secured her spot in the semifinal singles “A” flight with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Fairfield’s Pauline Rys. LoRusso lost the semifinal match to eventual champion Ana Mungo from UMBC 6-1, 6-3.

In the "D" singles flight, Emily Searle (Cherry Hill, N.J.) won her first match 6-1, 6-0 against Army's Angela Smith. She lost the quarterfinal match, 6-4, 6-1 to Grace Hedstrom from URI.

The women’s tennis team continues the fall season on Sept. 26-28 at the Army Invitational.
