Women's Tennis Finds its Stride in Singles at Army Invitational on Friday

WEST POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2008) – Every member of the University of Connecticut women’s tennis team to compete in the singles portion of this weekend’s Eastern Championships at Army won their match.

Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) turned a first round bye into a 6-1, 6-0 win in the first singles flight. LoRusso defeated Liz Chu from Seton Hall and will face UMBC's Ana Mungo on Saturday.

In the second singles flight, Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill) won a 6-2, 6-3 match over Jessica DeCarlos of Fairleigh Dickinson. Herb will face Fairfield's Paulina Rys in the next match.

Ali Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) advanced to the quarterfinals of the third singles flight, winning 6-1, 6-2 against Vanja Lakic of Niagara. Campitiello takes on Kristen Liu in the quarterfinal match.

UConn's BreAnn Cheung (Tucson, Ariz.) defeated Army's Maria Casaletto 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinal match on Saturday in the fourth singles flight.

Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa./State College Area) and Katie Mortiz (York, Pa.) lost 8-3 to fellow BIG EAST competitors Jennifer Yonkus and Joanna Zwirbulis from St. John's in the first doubles flight. The duo of Jenny Marotta (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Emily Searle (Lyme, Conn.) were shutout by a team from the tournament hosts, Army's Anne Lange and Audrey Hansen.

The championship resumes tomorrow morning and will wrap at West Point on Sunday.
