WEST POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2008) – Ali Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) advanced to the final match of the third singles bracket at the Eastern Championships. Seven members of the University of Connecticut women’s tennis team competed in Saturday’s tennis championships at Army.
Campitiello won her semifinal battle with Erica Federgreen in three sets, dropping the first 6-4. Campitiello came back to win it 6-2, 10-4 in the final two sets to solidify her spot in the final match against Stony Brook’s Fanny Carliquart on Sunday morning.
In fourth singles, BreAnn Cheung (Tucson, Ariz.) won two matches to face Ece Firat in the semifinal match. Cheung lost to her St. John’s competitor 6-2, 7-5. Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) lost in the first flight quarterfinal round 7-5, 6-2 to Ana Mungo from UMBC.
In the third singles flight, Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) advanced to the semifinal round with a straight set win over Paulina Rys from Fairfield. Herb defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinal match. Herb won the first set of the semifinal match against Salome Mkervadlize 6-0, but lost the final to 6-3, 10-5.
Katie Moritz (York, Pa.) and Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) won the first consolation bracket of doubles by default after winning two sets to secure their spot in the final match. Jennifer Marotta (Nesconset, N.Y.) and Emily Searle (Lyme, Conn.) lost the quarterfinal of the consolation bracket in second doubles 8-6.
