WEST POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2008) – Seeded 24th, Ali Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) won the Eastern Singles Championship in the third flight on Sunday at Army. Campitiello earned a 7-6, 7-6 (0) victory over Fanny Charliquart from Stony Brook.
Campitiello reached the finals, winning three-straight matches throughout the Eastern Championships at Lichtenberg Tennis Center. She took just one of her four matches to three sets. Campitiello defeated Erica Federgreen on Friday in the semifinal round, 4-6, 6-2, 10-4.
In consolation brackets, Alexa Gregory (York, Pa.) lost to Jessica Shurtz from Army in the Country Singles back draw while a UConn doubles pair was successful. Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) won an 8-3 decision in Honor Doubles over Army’s Maria Casaletto and Patricia Vollmer.
UConn travels to Massachusetts on Oct. 1 for a 2:30 p.m. match against the Minutemen.
