STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women’s tennis program will send six players to compete at the ITA Northeast Regional Championship at the University of Pennsylvania’s Hamlin Tennis Center. Play will get underway on Wednesday, October 18 and run through Sunday, October 22.
Senior Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnitsa, Ukraine) and junior Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph (Tampa, Fla.) are both in the main singles draw while two UConn doubles teams have qualified for the main draw as well. The tandem of Pletnyeva and sophomore Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia) and juniors Gillian Perrotta (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Fitz-Randolph will play in the main doubles draw.
Looking to qualify for the main draw will be senior Summer Walker (Conyers, Ga.), junior Jacqueline Lazaro (Largo, Fla.), Perrotta and Chung. The qualifying draw begins on Wednesday and they will need to win two matches to get to the main draw.
As a team, the Huskies have posted a 58-26 (.690) combined singles record this fall. Pletnyeva has posted a 10-3 record this fall playing at UConn’s No. 1 spot. She and Chung have played to a 5-4 mark this fall as doubles partners. At the No. 2 spot, Fitz-Randolph has posted a 6-4 singles record this fall and teamed with Perrotta for a 5-4 record. The duo posted a team-best 21-7 record last season.
Lazaro has had a big fall season for the Huskies, posting a team-best 12-1 mark and takes a seven-match winning streak into her qualifying attempt. Perrotta has played to an 8-2 clip this fall and has won five-straight heading into this week. Chung, in her first season in Storrs, was 7-3 while Walker finished up her fall with a 6-5 record.
