STORRS, Conn. – A program record six players from the UConn women’s tennis team will take part in this week’s ITA Northeast Regional Championship at Dartmouth College starting this Thursday. The tournament will take place from October 22nd through the 27th and will wrap-up the Huskies fall slate.
“The number of players we have qualified for this regional is the most in program history,” commented head coach Glenn Marshall. “We have had a very strong fall season, highlighted by dual match wins over UMass and Quinnipiac and numerous tournament titles at several fall Invitational tournaments.”
“The team has been working very hard and these results are a direct reflection of their efforts. I’m looking forward to seeing our players compete this weekend at the ITA Regional Championships.”
A pair of Huskies in senior Srna Stosljevic (Novi Saad, Serbia) and junior Emma Alderman (Hingham, Mass.) will play in the singles main draw starting Friday morning. Stosljevic heads into this weekend having posted a 9-4 singles record this fall to include winning the top-flight singles title at the Army Invitational where she rang off a 5-0 weekend. She will enter this tournament with a 9-1 mark over her last 10 matches.
Alderman has posted an 8-3 mark in singles play heading to Dartmouth. She won a pair of matches at the Harvard Invitational, Army Invitational and Wake Forest Invitational.
Three Huskies will open play in the qualifying singles draw, looking for a pair of wins to advance into the main draw. Junior Shea Flanagan (Overland Park, Kans.), sophomore Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva (Vinnitsa, Ukraine) and freshman Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph (Tampa, Fla.) will begin play on Thursday morning looking to advance. Flanagan will play Army’s Rugile Valiunaite, Pletnyeva is matched-up with Carol Benito of UMass and Fitz-Randolph will take on Seton Hall’s Luize Strike.
Flanagan has posted a 10-1 record in singles play this fall, tops on the team, and is coming off a singles title at the Wake Forest Invitational last time out. She went 3-0 at the event to share the “F” Flight Singles title with teammate Summer Walker (Conyers, Ga.). Flanagan opened the fall season with a singles title as well, sharing the “C” Flight title at the Quinnipiac Invitational with teammate Jacqueline Lazaro (Largo, Fla.).
Pletnyeva is 8-4 in singles play thus far and has won seven matches in tournament play. She picked-up three wins to advance to the semifinals of the second singles flight at the Army Invitational. Fitz-Randolph opened her collegiate career this fall and has posted six singles wins. She won both her matches in dual match wins over Quinnipiac and UMass, playing at the No. 3 spot.
UConn will send three doubles teams to the event, opening play on Friday in the main doubles draw. The duo of Alderman and Pletnyeva posted a team-best 8-4 mark this fall, earning seven wins in tournament play. The team of Stosljevic and Fitz-Randolph are 7-5 on the year heading into this weekend. Both teams posted 4-0 records to share the “A” Flight doubles title at the Army Invitational last month.
Flanagan and sophomore Zaina Zaki (West Chester, Pa.) will make up the other Husky doubles team this weekend. The duo have posted a 6-4 mark playing together this fall. Their highlight of the fall tournaments came with a run to the finals of the “B” Flight at the Army Invitational.
