NEW YORK, N.Y.-UConn women’s track and field sit in 11th place with six points after day one at the BIG EAST Championships. The Huskies saw the DMR team take home a bronze medal and eight head to Sunday’s finals.
On the track, sophomore Madalayne Smith (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) started the day off by automatically qualifying for the finals and ECAC Championships with a mark of 8.62 in the 60m hurdles, while senior Danielle Lyte (Burlington, Ontario) ran the 60m dash in 7.65 to automatically qualify for ECAC Championships on March 3-4. Lyte also qualified for the ECAC 200 meter dash.
Junior Ana Groff (Orlando, Fla.) will compete in the Sunday finals posting a time of 1:15.84 in the 500m dash and sophomore All-American Celina Emerson (Newark, Del.) placed third in the 400m dash (55.21) to reach the finals. Qualifying for the ECAC’s 400m dash was sophomore Tiffany Daley (56.73) and Nyanka Joseph (56.76).
Senior All-American Heather Wilson (Homer, N.Y.) kicked off the distance portion of the afternoon taking fifth (4:52.86) in the mile to earn her a ticket to Sunday’s final where teammate Shauna McNiff will join her after posting a time of 4:51.02.
The Huskies will send two to 1,000 meter finals as senior Meghan Cunningham (Simsbury, Conn.) and sophomore Stephanie Ellis (Gardner, Mass.) clocked in at 2:55.49 and 2:55.80. Leading the way in the 800 meter run was junior Brigitte Mania (Flemington, N.J.) as she qualified for the ECAC Championships and the finals with a time of 2:13.59.
Connecticut captured third place in the distance medley relay with a mark of 11:13.85. The Husky DMR made up of Mania, Emerson, Wilson and freshman Lindsay Crevoiserat qualified for the ECAC’s with their bronze medal performance.
The Huskies will continue in the BIG EAST Championships on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 9 a.m. Connecticut will be competing in the 3,000m run and the high jump in addition to sending eight to the finals of Saturday’s events. Check back at uconnhuskies.com for the results.
