RALEIGH, N.C.- The Huskies kicked off the 2012 outdoor campaign with great success as they had two take home first place honors with several others finishing in the top-ten of their respected events at NC State’s Raleigh Relays.
Returning to competition for the first time since the 2011 outdoor campaign, senior three-time All-American Victoria Flowers (Providence, R.I.) took home third place in the shot put with a toss of 15.20 meters. Also turning in strong performances in the field events was All-Americans Natasha McLaren (Stroudsburg, Pa.) and Ilva Bikanova (Madonas, Latvia) who placed second (1.75m) and fourth (1.70m) in the high jump.
On the track, All-American Celina Emerson (Newark, Del.) captured first place in the 400m dash with a time of 54.20. Along with Emerson, Tiffany Daley ran the 400 in 55.92, Ana Groff in 56.95 and Brianna Allen in 59.50.
Senior Courtney Dinnan (Hamden, Conn.) carried over her strengths in the distance events during the indoor season to the first outdoor meet as she claimed second place in the 5,000m run with a time of 17:29.93. In the 5,000m run sophomore Lauren Sara finished in 16:42.42.
Competing in prelims, sophomore Madalayne Smith (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) reached Saturday’s finals in the 100m hurdles posting a time of 14.10 in the preliminaries.
Connecticut had five runners compete in the 1,500 meter run. All-Americans Heather Wilson (Homer, N.Y.) and Brigitte Mania (Flemington, N.J.) grabbed first and second place crossing the finish line in 4:22.23 and 4:22.72, respectively. Freshman Lindsay Crevoiserat (Glastonbury, Conn.) was fifth in 4:24.59 and Meghan Cunningham finished in 4:30.34. Sophomore Stephanie Ellis (Gardner, Mass.) competed in a different section and concluded the run in 4:43.44.
The Huskies will conclude the Raleigh Relays on Saturday morning. Additionally, Connecticut will be hosting the UConn Spring Invite in Storrs, Conn. on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
