Emerson leads Huskies at Sea Ray Relays

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.- The UConn relay squads led the Huskies at the 47th annual Tennessee Sea Ray Relays at the Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium where a total of 60 teams competed. The 4x100 relay team was the lone first place finish for the Huskies, while the 4x400 team claimed second.

Deysha Smith-Jenkins (Milwaukee, Wisc.), Celina Emerson (Newark, Del.), Cornieta Anderson (Waterbury, Conn.) and Sarah Bowens (Hillburn, N.Y.) made up the first place 4x100 meter relay squad which crossed the finish line in 45.82.

The 4x400 meter team which crossed the finish line in 3:39.85 for second place consisted of Tiffany Daley (Northborough, Mass.), Emerson, Smith-Jenkins and Paris Taft (New Haven, Conn.). Daley  and Smith-Jenkins also added a top-ten finishes in the 400 meter dash as Daley finished ninth in 56.63 and Smith-Jenkins finished seventh in the 200 meter dash in 24.28.

Emerson also shined as a solo athlete taking third in the 400 meter showcase with a time of 54.25, while Brigitte Mania (Flemington, N.J.)  finished third  (2:07.06) and Julia Zrinyi (Winnipeg, Manitoba) took fifth (2:08.91) in the 800 meter showcase.

Connecticut also sent several Huskies to the UMass Invitational where the team found great success taking first with 108 points behind first place finishes. Victoria Flowers led the squad with two first place finishes in the shot put (16.10m - 52' 10") and the hammer throw (62.36m - 204' 7"). Her shot put toss is 27th nationally and 11th in the East Region and her hammer hurl is 13th nationally and 5th in East Region. Madalayne Smith finished first in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of14.04. On the field, Ilva Bikanova and Jasmine Cribb claimed first and second in the high jump (1.71m), respectively.

The Huskies are back in action on Saturday, April 20, at the Princeton Invite.
