PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Connecticut women's track and field team competed at the Brown Springtime Invitational on Sunday afternoon in Providence R.I. The Huskies will begin their championship season on Friday as they compete at the 2009 BIG EAST Outdoor Championship.
At Brown, UConn was led by Amanda Martin who won the javelin with a throw of 48.60 meters (159' 5"). Freshman All-American Victoria Flowers took first place in the hammer throw as she finished with a mark of 58.86 meters (193' 1").
In the high jump, two-time All-American Carin Knight and senior Rachael Porter dominated once again as they finished in the top two positions. Knight won the event as she finished with a jump of 1.70 meters (5' 7"), while Porter took runner-up at 1.65 meters (5' 5").
In distance events, UConn's Caitlin Cannon finished in second place in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:24.58, a season-best time for the sophomore runner.
Heather Wilson took second place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.96 which puts the freshman in fourth place on the UConn all-time list in outdoor competition. Sophomore Leah Andrianos finished in fourth place as UConn took two of the top four spots.
The Huskies will begin 2009 BIG EAST Championship competition on Friday, May 1 at 11:00 a.m. at Jumbo Elliot Track in Villanova, Pa. For more information log on to www.BIGEAST.org.
