JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- The University of Connecticut women's track and field team concluded the opening day of the 2012 Outdoor NCAA Championships First Round at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. The Huskies excelled in the track events with their All-Americans leading the way on the first day.
The top UConn performance on Thursday came from senior All-American Heather Wilson (Homer, N.Y.) who captured fourth place overall, first in her heat, in the 800m race with a time of 2:06.19 to reach Friday's quarterfinal. Also qualifying for Friday’s 800m was junior Ana Groff (Orlando, Fla.) with a time of 2:07.42.
Sophomore All-American Celina Emerson (Newark, Del.) qualified for Friday's quarterfinals of the 400m race when she crossed the finish line 19th on Thursday evening with a time of 53.64.
Senior All-American Victoria Flowers (Providence, R.I.) failed to punch her ticket to Iowa after completing her first event of this weekend's competition when she finished the shot put in 17th place with her toss of 15.35m (50-4 1/2). Flowers will have another opportunity to reach the finals on Saturday at 2 p.m. when she competes in the hammer throw.
UConn will continue the First Round on Friday with field events beginning at 5 p.m. and track events starting at 5:30 p.m.
