GREENSBORO, N.C.- Allison Lasnicki stamped her ticket to Oregon for the NCAA Championships in two weeks at the NCAA East Regionals in North Carolina on Thursday evening when she clocked in at 33:36.11 in the 10,000 meter run. Her time shattered UConn’s previous school record of 33.48.48 held by teammate Lauren Sara. Sara finished Thursday’s race in 34:31.03.
It was an all-around successful opening day for Connecticut as the remaining Huskies competing qualified for the next round in their respective events. All-Americans Celina Emerson (Newark, Del.) and Brigitte Mania (Flemington, N.J.) were joined by freshman Julia Zrinyi (Winnipeg, Manitoba) notching qualifying marks.
Mania led her heat in the 800 meter run and finished fourth overall with a time of 2:05.74, while Zrinyi was 10th in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:17.87. Emerson crossed the finish line in 53.80 in the 400m to qualify for Friday’s quarterfinal at 6 p.m.
The 800 meter run’s quarterfinal is set for 7 p.m. on Friday and the 1,500 meter’s quarterfinal is slated for Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
UConn’s field athletes will headline Friday’s competition with three All-Americans being featured as the high jumper duo of Ilva Bikanova (Madonas, Latvia) and Natasha McLaren (Stroudsburg, Pa.) are competing at 6 p.m. Victoria Flowers (Providence, R.I.) is slated to take part in the 10 a.m. hammer throw. Additionally, Shauna McNiff (Hingham, Mass.) will run at 8:50 p.m. in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
