STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut women’s track & field team will compete in a two-day meet at Penn State beginning today, Jan. 31, and continuing through Saturday, Feb. 1. Events begin today at 4:30pm and resume tomorrow morning at 10:15am.

The field will feature a competitive lineup including a number of former BIG EAST foes. Teams scheduled to participate include Stanford, Villanova, Georgetown, Syracuse, Dartmouth, Pittsburgh, Iowa State, and West Virginia.

UConn will look to take advantage of the two-day schedule, especially as it impacts the jumpers. “The jumpers have a great situation this weekend,” said assistant coach Amy Begley. “They long jump on Friday and triple jump on Saturday, giving them recover time in between events.” The Huskies have excelled in jumping events this season, with Melodee Riley grabbing first place at the Terrier classic last weekend in the triple jump on a personal-best 12.24M effort. Sarah Bowens has also set new career-highs in the long jump this year, reaching a distance of 5.84M at the Great Dane Classic on Jan. 17.

Coach Begley also highlighted the 4x400 meter relay as a particularly competitive event this weekend with several of the top teams in the nation competing. Connecticut’s quartet of Faith Dismuke, Deysha Smith-Jenkins, Paris Taft, and Celina Emerson will look to break the school record in the 4x400. Last week the group posted a 3:40.44 finish to threaten the record.
