Women's Track and Field Finishes Day One at New England Championship

BOSTON, Mass. (February 29, 2008) - The University of Connecticut women's track and field team finished day one of competition of the New England Championship in Boston, Mass. on Friday.

Sacred Heart University leads the way after the first day of competition with 29 points in six scored events. The championship's second day of competition starts on Saturday, March 1 at 8:00 a.m.

The Huskies were led by sophomore Tynisha McMillian (Bridgeport, Conn.), who finished second in the weight throw with a distance of 18.31m (60-01.00), the program's fourth-best throw on the all-time performance list.

Trisha-Ann Hawthorne (Elmsford, N.Y.) finished the 55m dash preliminaries in first place with a time of 7.02, while teammates Monique Hodges (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Jessica White (Middleton, Mass.) finished in third and fourth, respectively. All three Huskies return on Saturday for the final races.

Hawthorne and Hodges will join Phylicia George (Markham, Ont.) in the 200m dash finals on Saturday as Hawthorne won the sprint in 24.51, with George right behind in second. Junior Mandela Graves-Fulgham (Shutesbury, Mass.) took first in the 400m dash with a finish of 55.32 and will lead the Huskies in that event in the finals tomorrow.

The Huskies will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, March 1, to complete the New England Championship.
