STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut women’s track and field team will embark on its 2014 Outdoor season on Friday when it competes at the Florida State University Relays in Tallahassee, Florida. Events begin on Friday, March 21 with the 4x100 meter relay at 1:00pm. Competition wraps up on Saturday, March 22 with the 4x400 meter relays.
UConn enters the outdoor season after a solid indoor campaign that saw it place second in the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship and win its 10th overall and second consecutive ECAC Title in Boston on March 9. Indoor highlights included Celina Emerson (Newark, Del.) breaking the school record in the 400 meter run with a time of 53.38 on Feb. 8. Emerson would go on to earn the program’s first American Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week nod in recognition of her performance.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Celina Emerson, Deysha Smith-Jenkins, Faith Dismuke and Nyanka Joseph also set a school record of their own, finishing first with a time of 3:37.92. The win marked the first time a UConn 4x400 team took home first place in any championship. The quartet will look to continue this momentum at the FSU Relays this weekend.
A standout performance by sophomore Emily Durgin (Portland, Maine) earned her Most Outstanding Track performer at the inaugural Conference Championship. Durgin captured both the 3,000 meter and 5,000 meter titles and ran the anchor leg of the Distance Medley Relay to pace the Huskies in their first American Championship.
Results from the FSU Relays will be posted as soon as they become available.
