STORRS, Conn. - On Friday, March 28, the women’s track and field team will be competing in the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C. Events begin at 8:45 a.m. with the 3000M Steeplechase and end at 10:35 p.m. with the 10,000M on day one before picking back up again on Saturday, March 29.
Last year’s Raleigh Relay was a successful one for UConn. At least one Husky placed in the top five in every event except for the 100m. Additionally, the team was able to take first place in 3 out of the 11 events, second place in three events, and third in three events as well. Considering the Huskies’ early success in the opening weekend of the season at the FSU Relays, Connecticut has similar if not improved chances of success.
Coming off of a record-breaking weekend, the Huskies are determined to carry their success to their second meet of the season. Celina Emerson finished second in the 400m run at the FSU Relays this past weekend. She posted a time of 53.09, which marks the 3rd fastest in the country and is just .04 off the school record. She also ran the first leg of the 4x400 meter relay squad that captured first in 3:36.35, which set the school record and is the second fastest time in the country at this moment.
“At Raleigh Relays we are looking for the athletes to continue to improve and run times that will get them into Regionals,” said assistant coach Amy Begley. “Raleigh Relays presents an opportunity for the athletes to compete against great fields and run personal bests. We hope the weather cooperates to give them the best situation for fast times.”
