STORRS, Conn. – UConn’s Brigitte Mania has been named the BIG EAST Women’s Track Athlete of the Week as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon. The Flemington, N.J. native earns her first ever weekly award by the BIG EAST following her outstanding performances at this past weekend’s Raleigh Relays hosted by N.C. State.
“This is a great honor for Brigitte [Mania] when considering the other great performances this week from such a challenging conference as the BIG EAST. Coach Andrea Grove-McDonough did a great job in preparing Brigitte for what I believe was her best race to date,” Head Coach Bill Morgan stated. “Working in tandem with Heather Wilson they are both arguably the best tandem in the country in the 800, but it was Brigitte's day and a hard fought victory. She had an outstanding performance.”
Mania kicked off the 2012 outdoor campaign with a bang as she captured second place in the 1,500m run crossing the finish line in 4:22.72. This time is currently tenth in the nation and third in the BIG EAST. The sophomore added to her greatness when she claimed the 800m title in 2:04.86. Her first place finish is ranked first in the nation, while she broke her own record in UConn’s all-time record book.
Mania and the Huskies will continue their season this weekend when they host the UConn All-Region meet in Storrs, Conn. starting at noon.
