STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut women’s track and field team will host Boston College, UMass-Amherst and the University of Rhode Island on Saturday in the UConn Invitational at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. Events begin with the Javelin at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and will conclude with the 4x400m relay at 4:45 p.m. As this will be the final home meet for the UConn seniors, the Huskies will take a moment at 4:30 p.m. to honor those five individuals and their contributions to the track and field program at Connecticut over the past four years.
The Huskies enter their third meet of the outdoor season after competing at the FSU Relays and Raleigh Relays over the last two weekends. The Huskies opened the season on an incredibly strong note at the FSU Relays, with the 4x400m team of Celina Emerson, Tiffany Daley, Nyanka Joseph and Deysha Smith-Jenkins setting the school record with a winning time of 3:36.35.
Emerson also posted a brilliant individual performance in the 400 meter run, crossing the finish line .04 seconds off the school record . Emerson’s 400m time and the 4x400 meter times both marked the fastest results in Division I so far in the season. Emerson’s 53.09 currently ranks second in Division I and the 4x400 claims fifth place on the national leaderboards.
Bringing momentum into her final home meet will be senior Brigitte Mania, who raced to a second place finish in the 1,500m last weekend in Raleigh to claim the third fastest time in the NCAA (4:21.34).
Results and recaps will be posted as soon as they become available.
