STORRS, Conn.- The University of Connecticut women’s track and field program has five Huskies competing in six events at this week’s NCAA National Championship Meet at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The NCAA Championships begin on Wednesday, June 5, at noon and runs through Saturday, June 8. Ilva Bikanova, Victoria Flowers, Brigitte Mania, Allison Lasnicki and Julia Zrinyi will partake in their respective events in Oregon.
Flowers, a five-time All-American, leads the mostly veteran squad to the West Coast this week as she qualified for both the hammer throw and the shot put. Flowers has compiled a remarkable senior campaign to cap off an outstanding collegiate career with the Huskies. The Providence, R.I. native swept the 2013 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships winning both the hammer and shot put, while also capturing the pair of crowns at the ECAC Championships.
Flowers qualified for both events following a successful trip to Greensboro in late May where she registered a fourth place throw of 16.39m in the shot put and a toss of 59.90m in the hammer for tenth place. She will compete in Wednesday’s hammer event at 1 p.m. followed by Saturday’s shot put at 1 p.m.
UConn’s second All-American competing in a field event will be Bikanova in the high jump. The two-time All-American cleared a mark of 1.81m for a four-way sixth place tie in North Carolina. The high jump is slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday in Oregon.
Guiding the Huskies on the track will be All-American Mania in the 800 meter run after posting a qualifying time of 2:04.81 for a fourth place finish. The 800 meter semifinals will take place on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. The top-8 will head to Friday’s 5:20 final.
Connecticut has two Huskies competing in long distance events with Lasnicki in the 10,000 meter run and Zrinyi in the 1,500 meter run. Lasnicki stamped her ticket to the finals when she shattered the school record at the regionals to finish the race in sixth place with a time of 33:36.11. Lasnicki’s final will begin at 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday. Zrinyi heads to her first national meet after a ninth place (4:16.49) finish at regionals. The 1,500 semifinals are on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. followed by the top-8 reaching the finals on Saturday at 2:20 p.m.
