Victoria Flowers Earns BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sports Excellence Award

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – UConn women’s track and field standout Victoria Flowers earned the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sports Excellence Award for women’s indoor track and field as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.  The BIG EAST Conference announced 24 winners of the 2012-13 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards, which recognize academic and athletic achievement as well as community service. 

The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each Big East-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the Big East Faculty Athletics Representative Council.

Flowers capped off a spectacular career at UConn with an excellent senior campaign which included winning three BIG EAST crowns as the Providence, R.I. native won the indoor weight throw and the outdoor shot put and hammer titles. Earning three All-American honors in 2013, Flowers totaled seven career All-American titles which is most in program history. She was tabbed both the 2013 indoor and outdoor Northeast Regional Field Athlete of the Year for her outstanding performances.

Two-time All-Big East First Team pitcher. Holds school records for career shutouts (five) and strikeouts (256) and second in career wins (26).

Men’s Basketball

Averaged a team-high 18.7 points for a team that won the NCAA and Big East championships. All-America Third Team choice of Sporting News and the NABC.

Women’s Basketball

Anna Martin


American Eagle Outfitters Big East Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Big East Sportsmanship Award winner. Scored 1,756 career points.

Men’s Cross Country

Alex Tully


Earned NCAA All-Mid Atlantic Regional honors to help Villanova earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.

Women’s Cross Country

Laura Nagel


Earned All-America honors at the NCAA Championships, finishing 35th overall and helping the team to a national runner-up finish. Earned All-Big East honors after placing 11th at the conference meet.

Field Hockey

Erin Conrad


Registered a 1.81 goals-against average and a .745 save percentage for the 12-8 Cardinals. All-Big East Second Team selection.


Duron Harmon


All-Big East First Team safety. Third-round draft pick of the New England Patriots. Earned a 4.0 GPA in the Spring 2013 semester.

Men’s Golf

Michael Kania


Two-time All-Big East selection. Named to the Ping All-Region Team and was Villanova’s 2012-13 Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Women’s Golf

Hannah Basalone

Seton Hall

2012 All-Big East selection. Registered two top-10 finishes and one top-five finish in 2012-13.

Men’s Lacrosse

Jeff Lowman

St. John’s

Two-time All-Big East Second Team goalie. Ranked third in the conference in save percentage (.567) and second in saves per game (12.75).

Women’s Lacrosse

Nikki Boltja


All-Big East First Team and IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region First Team honoree. Led the Big East in goals per game (3.71), scoring 63 goals in 17 contests.

Women’s Rowing

Coxswain for varsity eight that won two Big East Championship grand finals and advanced to two NCAA Championshps. Placed 13th at 2013 NCAA Championship.

Second-team Capital One Academic All-America selection. Earned All-Big East Second Team honors.

Women’s Soccer

Big East Defensive Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Big East Championship. Two-time All-Big East selection, including a first-team choice in 2012.

Second-team Capital One Academic All-America. All-Big East Third Team selection at shortstop.

Men’s Swimming & Diving

Member of 400-yard freestyle relay squad that took fourth at the NCAA Championships. Member of Big East-record-setting 400 and 800 freestyle relay squads.

Earned honorable mention All-America status in the 200 backstroke and 400 medley relay at the NCAA Championships. Qualified for the NCAA meet in six events.

Men’s Tennis

Greg Andrews

Two-time Big East Player of the Year. Qualified for the NCAA Championships in singles play. Three-time All-Big East selection.

Women’s Tennis

Jennifer Kellner

Notre Dame

Two-time All-Big East selection. Helped team to three Big East titles and three NCAA tournament appearances. Played at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.

Men’s Indoor Track & Field

Corey Crawford


Won the IC4A indoor title in the long jump. Ranked 23rd nationally in the long jump. Placed second at the Big East Championship.

Women’s Indoor Track & Field

Victoria Flowers


Big East indoor champion in the weight throw and the league runner-up in the shot put. Placed 10th in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championship.

Men’s Outdoor Track & Field

Samuel Ellison


Two-time Big East outdoor champion in the 800-meter run. Three-time All-America, three-time Big East champion and seven-time All-Big East performer.

Women’s Outdoor Track & Field

Alexa Aragon

Notre Dame

Big East outdoor champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Finished eighth at the NCAA Outdoor Championship.

Women’s Volleyball
