LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of Connecticut volleyball team came away with a 1-2 record at the LMU Invitational to open its 2012 season. On Saturday, the Huskies defeated UC-Santa Barbara 3-0 in the morning session before falling to Iona, 3-1, in the afternoon.
UConn won the first match of the day by scores of 25-16, 26-24 and 25-21. Against Iona, the Huskies fell in the first two sets, 26-24 and 28-26, before breaking through with a 25-15 third-set victory, and ultimately fell in the fourth, 25-9.
Quayle dominated against UCSB with 20-kills and 11 digs for her first double-double of the season. Freshman outside hitter Madeline Kuppe (Palo Alto, Calif.) recorded 14 kills in the win.
In the afternoon, the Huskies were narrowly defeated in the first two sets against the Gaels. Quayle and Wattles led the way with 14 kills each.
Freshman setter Marissa Prinzbach (Cincinnati, Ohio) earned her first career start against UCSB and dished out 39 assists and added 24 more against Iona. Senior Angela Roidt (McFarland, Wis.) contributed 16 against the Gaels. Senior libero Kelsey Maving (Tonowanda, N.Y.) totaled 52 digs on the day with 26 in each contest.
Connecticut returns home next weekend to host the UConn Classic at Gampel Pavilion on Friday, August 31 and Saturday, September 1. The Huskies will welcome Dartmouth, Fairfield and Michigan State to the two-day, six-match tournament.
