HAMILTON, N.Y. – Despite trailing early, the University of Connecticut volleyball team stormed back for a 3-1 win over Colgate on Saturday afternoon at the Cotterell Court. Senior outside hitter Jade Strawberry had a game-high 17 kills in the victory.
After losing the first set to the Raiders, 25-20, the Huskies (2-0) rallied back with three straight set wins in convincing fashion: 25-17, 25-16, and 25-18. With the victory, UConn opens the 2016 season with a sweep at the Syracuse Invitational.
As a team, the Huskies had 72 kills to Colgate’s 48, showing evidence of a much more aggressive offensive attack.
In the tiebreaking third set, the Huskies trailed 3-1 before going on a 15-8 run to take a commanding 18-9 lead and eventually win the set. Strawberry recorded five kills in three of four sets on Saturday.
The fourth and final set saw UConn trailing just 4-3 before the Huskies overtook the Raiders for good. Four different players had at least three kills for UConn in the fourth set, displaying offensive balance.
With the win, the Huskies move into the LSU Tiger Classic next weekend with a 2-0 record. UConn will face LSU and Southern Miss on Friday, with first serve at 11 a.m. (ET) and 6:30 p.m. (ET), respectively. On Saturday, it faces Virginia at 12 p.m. (ET).
