STORRS, Conn. – Sophomore outside hitter Devon Maugle (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) registered her first double-double of the season to lead the University of Connecticut volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Dartmouth in its opening game of the UConn Classic at Gampel Pavilion, Friday night.
Maugle posted a match-high 17 kills to go with 14 digs as the Huskies downed the Big Green 25-7, 28-26, 25-16. She stepped up to serve with UConn holding a 12-3 lead in the first set and rattled off eight consecutive points, including a pair of kills from senior outside hitter Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.).
Dartmouth pushed Connecticut to the brink in the second, but nine kills from Maugle, who hit .385 for the match, and five from Quayle was enough to hold off the Big Green.
For Dartmouth, sophomore libero Holly Harper collected a match-leading 21 digs, while senior libero Kelsey Maving (Tonowanda, N.Y.) had 17 for UConn. Freshman setter Marissa Prinzbach (Cincinnati, Ohio) dished out 31 assists in her home debut.
Freshman outside hitter Madeline Kuppe (Palo Alto, Calif.) contributed eight kills for the Huskies and fellow freshman middle blocker Erika Thomas (Ocoee, Fla.) dominated at the net with nine blocks, four solo.
As a team, Connecticut hit .232 for the match, while holding Dartmouth to a .000 attack percentage.
In game one of the night, Michigan State downed Fairfield, 3-0. The Spartans won by scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-22.
The Huskies play again tomorrow at 12:30 pm against intrastate rival Fairfield before facing Michigan State at 7:30 pm to round out the Classic. Play begins at 10:00 am as Dartmouth takes on MSU and continues at 5:00 pm with the Stags facing the Big Green.
