STORRS, Conn. - The UConn volleyball team wrapped up day two of the Dog Pound Challenge with a 3-0 sweep against Hartford on Saturday afternoon in front of another full capacity crowd at Guyer Gym. The Huskies now own a 4-2 mark in 2017, while the Hawks drop to 0-6.
The team posted a 2-1 mark in their opening weekend at Guyer Gym, seeing their only defeat come to undefeated LSU (6-0) in front of a sold out crowd on Friday night. In UConn's two wins, they defeated their opponents by a combined six-sets-to-none, for their second and third sweep of the season, respectively.
In three games this weekend, Cason averaged 12 kills per game, including a season-high 18 kills against LSU on Friday night. Defensively, the senior racked up 18 digs and posted five blocks in a 2-1 weekend for the Huskies. Additionally, she added four services aces.
Turner, the team's leading setter, paced all Huskies with 100 assists during the tournament. The setter picked up a season-best 45 assists and seven digs against LSU in a closely contested 3-2 loss to the Tigers. The junior boasted 15 digs, three kills and three services aces during the tournament.
The Huskies got back in the win column with a dominating 3-0 win against Hartford on Saturday afternoon. Red-shirt sophomore Kayla Williams paced all players with a match-high 14 kills, while freshman Ally Barrett had her best offensive outing of the season with seven kills. Barrett also picked up block in the match. Turner added 24 helpers on the day, while Williams turned in a match-best seven digs and four service aces.
The Huskies flew out to a quick 5-0 advantage, behind a pair of service aces from Turner, a pair of kills from Williams and one Hartford attack error. The Hawks were able to close the gap to one, 9-8, but UConn was able to spark a 6-1 run for a 15-9 edge. The home team held their opponents to just four points for the remainder of the set, as en route to a 25-13 victory. William's notched seven kills in the set, while Turner led the way in assists (8) and service aces (2)
Carrying their offense power into the second set, UConn found themselves with a comfortable 2-0 lead after a 25-19 victory in set two. The squad was off and running from the first point, never trailing to their opponents. Williams continued to be a force as she added three service aces in the set. Cason tallied a set-high four kills in the, while Barrett and redshirt-freshman Genna Florig added a block apiece.
The third set proved to be a rubber match, as the final set saw five different lead changes. Barrett proved to be the difference maker in the set, as she posted three straight kills to give her team a 22-17 edge that forced Hartford to call a time out. The time out didn't faze the Huskies as they were able to string together a late 3-0 win to secure the 25-17 victory and complete the sweep of the Hawks.
UConn heads to Philadelphia next weekend for the Villanova Classic for the beginning of a three-game road swing. The Huskies will square off against UAlbany on Friday, Sept. 8 at 11:30 a.m. before matching up against host Villanova at 7:00 p.m. later that night. The squad will wrap up the weekend against Princeton for an 11:00 a.m. showdown on Saturday, 11:00 a.m.
